Production
Let's start with a very basic exercise but one with an important purpose. Simply, you'll be given a word in English or a picture and have to say aloud the equivalent word in Japanese. That's it. Yet it should not be underestimated because of its simplicity. When you have a strong mix and balance of other exercises to go with this simple one, this exercise is perfect.
Production exercises have two very important uses. First, our ability to speak a new language is greatly enhanced just by being able to recall thousands of very simple and straightforward words and phrases with lightning speed and little to no trouble. We need to know how to quickly say things like 青 (blue), 丸 (circle), 運転手 (bus driver), 牛乳パック (milk carton), 喉が痛い (to have a sore throat), 皿を洗う (to wash the dishes), 電気を消す (to turn on the lights), and コンセントに差す (to plug in). That's where Production exercises in the right quantity can help you.
If you can't remember a word or phrase after five seconds, just retest it. Don't strain yourself in order to recall it. And don't try to push it into your mind in order to remember it next time. Those are short-term memory tactics. Some words and phrases require a single test to learn while others may require six, seven, eight, or even more retests over a period of several months to make it into our long-term memory.
The second use of this exercise is to practice good pitch accent and pronunciation. Pay special attention to properly producing each sound like a native speaker would. This special attention makes all the difference between a thick foreign accent and an authentic Japanese accent.
For instance, when you see "decay" on the front side of this flashcard exercise, instead of just quickly muttering "fuhai" to yourself, practice saying it aloud with proper pitch accent and pronunciation. Really focus on starting with a low pitch and gradually raising it to a high pitch like Japanese people do when they say 腐敗. Take the extra two seconds to make sure you are properly producing the [ɸ] sound.
